3VB’s support and call for wider support for the Emergency Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal

There is a humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Turkey and Syria, following the two earthquakes that hit the region on Monday 6 February. The death toll has now surpassed 33,000 and that number is rising, as emergency teams from around the world work in freezing conditions to rescue those still trapped under the rubble.

On Tuesday 7 February, we invited everyone at 3VB to consider donating to the British Red Cross appeal in support of their emergency relief programme in Turkey and Syria, which will go directly to support the work of the Turkish Red Crescent and Syrian Arab Red Crescent in their efforts to provide emergency first aid and evacuate people to safety.

In the first 24 hours, we raised over £12,000 from members of Chambers. Since we announced the initiative on our website, some of our clients and colleagues from the Bar have chosen to start making donations themselves and the total raised now stands at just over £21,200. Our JustGiving page can be found here.

We would like to encourage donations from the wider legal profession. The British Red Cross’s appeal page can be found here.

Any donations made through our page or directly through the British Red Cross’s Appeal page will attract Gift Aid and go directly to supporting the work on the ground of the Turkish Red Crescent and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent. The Turkish Red Crescent has launched a crisis response operation and mobilised teams in more than ten regions across the country, while the Syrian Arab Red Crescent is delivering assistance and support to those in need in the regions of Hama, Aleppo and Lattakia. Both organisations are providing emergency first aid and evacuating people to safety.

Any donation, big or small, will have an impact.
