Practice Overview
Ashrutha joined Chambers as a tenant in October 2025, following the successful completion of her pupillage. She is building a diverse practice spanning public international law, international arbitration, human rights and commercial law.
Ashrutha has previously worked as a Judicial Fellow and Associate Legal Officer at the International Court of Justice and as a Judicial Clerk at the Supreme Court of India.
Ashrutha holds a PhD in public international law from the University of Cambridge. Her doctoral research was on the protection of cultural heritage in armed conflict. She holds a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School and a dual Bachelor of Law and Arts from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore. She is a member of the International Law Association’s Committee on the Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage in Armed Conflict; and a member of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Working Group of Blue Shield UK, an international non-governmental organisation for the protection of cultural heritage in conflict.
Ashrutha has taught public international law to undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Cambridge. Her work has been published in leading journals including the Leiden Journal of International Law (Cambridge University Press) and the London Review of International Law (Oxford University Press). She was on the editorial team of the Harvard International Law Journal and was Managing Editor of the Cambridge International Law Journal.
Ashrutha was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2024 and admitted as an advocate by the Bar Council of India in 2017.

- Assisted (as a pupil) in advising a Middle Eastern state on its ratification of the BBNJ/High Seas Treaty.
- Assisted (as a pupil) in advising an indigenous group on the right to external and internal self-determination.
- Assisted (as a pupil) in drafting submissions on behalf of a state in the ICJ Advisory Opinion on Obligations of Israel in relation to the Presence and Activities of the United Nations, Other International Organizations and Third States in and in relation to the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
- Assisted (as a pupil) in Hulley Enterprises v Russia [2025] EWCA 108, an appeal against the dismissal of Russia’s challenge to the jurisdiction of the English court on the ground of state immunity.
- Prepared (as a pupil) a note on reservations to multilateral treaties.
- Prepared (as a pupil) a note on the retrospective application of the Genocide Convention.
- *As an ICJ Judicial Fellow, assisted Judge Bhandari in cases including Bahrain & ors v Qatar (airspace restrictions), Somalia v Kenya (maritime delimitation) and The Gambia v Myanmar (allegations of genocide).
- *Submitted an amicus brief to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in Miskito Divers v Honduras (right to work and health of an indigenous group).
- *Assisted in drafting a communication letter to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in the investigation into the situation in Palestine (concerning West Bank settlements).

- Acting on behalf of a minority shareholder in a restaurant group in an arbitration concerning breach of the shareholders’ agreement.
- Acting on behalf of a Belgian company in an LCIA arbitration concerning non-payment of promissory notes by a West African state.
- Advising a commercial bank on a potential investment treaty claim arising from shipping finance arrangements.
- Assisted (as a pupil) in Hulley Enterprises v Russia [2025] EWCA 108, an appeal against dismissal of Russia’s challenge to the jurisdiction of the English court to enforce the Yukos arbitral awards.
- Assisted (as a pupil) in advising a claimant on a potential investment treaty claim against a Central African country on the ground of denial of justice.
- Assisted (as a pupil) in drafting the claimant’s memorial in an ICSID arbitration relating to a construction project in a Middle Eastern state.
- Prepared (as a pupil) a research note on a section 67 challenge to an arbitral award in a dispute between a pharmaceutical company and a Middle Eastern state.
- Assisted (as a pupil) in an ICC arbitration concerning a share purchase agreement between a Latin American renewable energy company and various entities holding shares in wind farms.
