Practice Overview
Stuart Richard Young, SC was a practicing attorney for 17 years before being elected to the Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on September 7, 2015 as the member for the Port-of-Spain North/St Ann’s West Constituency. He first served in the Cabinet of Trinidad and Tobago as Minister in the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs and went onto serve in several Ministerial capacities including Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Minister of Communications and Minister of National Security.
In 2021, he was the appointed the Minister of Energy and Energy Industries in addition to his duties as Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister where notably he led the Government’s re-negotiation of several critical contracts in the country’s hydrocarbon sector, including the unprecedented restructuring of Atlantic LNG with shareholders Shell and bp. In December 2023, he concluded the negotiation of an unprecedented 30-year Exploration and Production Licence for the production and export of natural gas from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to Trinidad and Tobago (a joint venture with Shell and the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago (NGC)). Additionally, in 2024, he steered the successful negotiations on behalf of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to acquire another licence, granted by the Government of Venezuela for exploration and production of natural gas from the Cocuina-Manakin cross border gas field securing an agreement for NGC and bp to jointly operate this field.
The Honourable Stuart R. Young was awarded silk in June 2024 and conferred with the title of Senior Counsel.
On March 17, 2025, The Honourable Stuart R. Young, Senior Counsel and Member of Parliament for Port of Spain North/ St. Ann’s West, became the 8th Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
The Prime Minister graduated from St. Mary’s College in Port of Spain, Trinidad in 1992 and went on to read law at University of Nottingham, UK, graduating in 1996. In 1997, he was admitted to the bar in England and Wales at Gray’s Inn. He is also admitted to the bar in Trinidad and Tobago, the Commonwealth of Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda.
In his legal practice he appeared as counsel in several Commissions of Enquiry. He also acted as counsel in a wide range of matters including, judicial reviews, constitutional motions, complex commercial litigation, medical negligence matters, election petitions and appeared at various statutory and internal tribunals. He represented many unions and workers in Industrial Relations matters and embodied the title of advocate attorney throughout his practice.
