Can Yeginsu to speak at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in its High-Level Week
This week Can Yeginsu will speak at several events at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly during its high-level week in New York City.
- On Thursday 26th September, Professor Yeginsu will moderate the event commemorating the 5th Anniversary of the establishment of the Media Freedom Coalition of States, chaired by Germany and Estonia. Professor Yeginsu will be joined by Nobel Peace Laureate, Maria Ressa, the CEO of the Committee to Protect Journalists, Jodie Ginsberg, as well as Omar Faruk Osman, the Secretary General of the National Union of Somali Journalists and President of the Federation of African Journalists.
- On the 27th September, Professor Yeginsu will co-chair a meeting of the High Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom in New York, before chairing a panel event at the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations in New York, with E. Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Dr. Arnoldo André, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Costa Rica, Jan Lipavský, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Nobel Laureate, Maria Ressa, and Jodie Ginsburg from the Committee to Protect Journalists.
On the 26th September, Professor Yeginsu will also be returning to Columbia Law School’s Human Rights Institute to chair the ‘Media Freedom and International Law: The case of the Media Freedom Coalition of States’ panel at Columbia Law School. He will be joined by Hina Jilani from the Elders, Catherine Amirfar, Deputy Chair of the High Level Panel and Co-Chair of the Public International Law Group at Debevoise & Plimpton, Amelia Evans, Deputy Director of Advocacy at the Committee to Protect Journalists, and Rebecca Vincent, Director of Campaigns at Reporters without Borders.
During the course of high-level week, Professor Yeginsu will be meeting with State representatives on official duties in his capacity as the Deputy Chair of the High Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom.
The Media Freedom Coalition of States was established in 2019 as a partnership of countries working together to promote and protect media freedom around the world. The Coalition is built on three constituent pillars: (i) the 51 State Members, (ii) the civil society Consultative Network; and (iii) the Coalition’s independent body of legal advisors, the High Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom.
