“Banging the Table”: A Commentary on the Struggle for the Rule of Law in Contemporary Uganda

Join us, JUSTICE & IADRU, for an insightful lecture on the intersection of law, human rights, and political power in Uganda and Africa at large.

Our special guest lecturer is Professor Oloka-Onyango – Professor of Law at Makerere University in Kampala for over 40 years; visiting professor at Harvard, Oxford, Cape Town and NYU; and member of the United National Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. His wide range of legal research and publications challenge hegemony and power structures to protect the rule of law and human rights and include: When Courts do Politics; Public Interest Law and Litigation in East Africa; and Debating Love, Human Rights and Identity Politics in East Africa.

His lecture will reflect the struggle for human rights and the Rule of Law as it takes place in Uganda and in Africa. Right from independence in 1962, Uganda has been the scene of contentious struggles over the protection of democratic freedoms and political accountability. Much has been achieved in this remarkable country, which has been a leader in many respects. The lecture will encompass recent developments—among them the enduring phenomenon of militarism, challenges in the wake of the Anti-Homosexuality Act, and the question of succession so commonly faced globally—these have serious implications for the enhancement of constitutionalism and the protection of the Rule of Law in Africa and around the world.
