Sir Ross Cranston Publishes New Book: Judging
Oxford University Press has published Judging, a new book by 3VB Associate Member Professor Sir Ross Cranston, offering a rare and illuminating look into the work of judges in civil law matters.
Drawing on his experience as a former High Court judge, Professor Sir Ross provides unique insights into what judging truly involves – beyond the act of decision-making itself. The book explores how judges navigate fact-finding, interact with litigants in person, deliver ex tempore decisions, and craft written judgments.
Judging brings together a rich array of material: personal judicial experience, conversations with judges, legal sources, and research from social science and psychology. The result is an authoritative and deeply reflective account of the modern judicial role – accessible to practitioners, scholars, and anyone interested in how justice is delivered in practice.
Topics covered include judicial appointments, the realities of courtroom decision-making, and the challenges faced by those dealing with smaller claims.
Sir Ross Cranston is a former Judge of the High Court of England and Wales, who sat in Commercial Court and in 2016 became the judge in charge of the Administrative Court. He served as Solicitor-General for England and Wales from 1998 to 2001.
Judging is available from Oxford University Press.
