Bank account closures and payment suspensions: do banks wield too much power?

Saima Hanif KC, Tariq Baloch and Ravi Jackson are back together and this time with guest speaker James Russell from Humphries Kerstetter, to continue speaking on the intensively discussed topic of bank closures and payment suspensions: do banks wield too much power?

Following recent developments, namely HMT’s publication of the draft Payment Services (Contract Terminations Amendment) Regulations 2024, the APPG report on de-banking, and various Court decisions relating to the termination of banking relationships, the Panel will examine why debanking continues to be a problem, in particular for HNW individuals and global citizens.  The Panel will review the existing routes of legal challenge for aggrieved customers, the available remedies and their efficacy.  The Panel will also discuss concerns around financial inclusion, why the current legal and regulatory system may not be sufficient to hold banks accountable for such draconian actions, and whether the proposed legislation offers an adequate solution to these problems.
