LIDW 2025: 3VB & Peters & Peters – Navigating sanctions and trade controls in a sea of global uncertainty

3VB and Peters & Peters are delighted to invite you to a Panel discussion which will consider recent developments in sanctions law in the context of wider geopolitical issues.

The panel will be chaired by the eminent Sir Ross Cranston, a Barrister at 3VB, a professor of law at the LSE, and a former High Court Judge. Sir Ross delivered the first instance judgment in the Dalston Projects Ltd case, which was a legal challenge to a decision of the Secretary of State for Transport to detain a yacht in London under the UK’s Russian sanctions regime; the challenge has recently been heard by the Supreme Court.

Saima Hanif KC is a barrister at 3VB who specialises in sanctions law. She is currently acting for Barclays Bank in a sanctions dispute arising out of the US Iranian sanctions regime and the EU Blocking Regulation and recently acted for a party in a US$2 billion ad hoc arbitration arising out of the non-performance of an oil and gas contract, allegedly for sanction reasons. She has also given expert legal evidence on the application of the UK sanctions regime in foreign Court proceedings and arbitration proceedings, including the application of the UK Russia regulations in the context of article 248 of the Arbitrazh Procedure code.

Dr Anna Bradshaw, a financial crime and sanctions expert, is a Partner in the Business Crime Department at Peters & Peters, in London. She is an Associate Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), assisting the Centre for Financial Crime and Security Studies with its research on US, EU and UK sanctions. She is a founder of the Sanctions Practitioners Group, a member of the European Criminal Bar Association working group on sanctions and sits on the committee of the Fraud Lawyers Association. She has given evidence in Parliament on a number of EU criminal law and criminal justice cooperation matters in her former capacity as a member of the Law Society’s EU Committee.

Alan Kartashkin is a partner in the London office of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, head of the Eastern European practice, and former managing partner of the firm’s Moscow office. His practice focuses on sanctions, securities and M&A. For over a decade, he has advised leading U.S., EU, UK, Japanese, Chinese and Russian corporations and financial institutions as well as boards of directors and special committees of independent directors on the application of and compliance with the sanctions imposed by the U.S., UK and EU.

Arjun Ahluwalia is Santander CIB’s Global Head of Sanctions and Geopolitical Risk. He is a legal, compliance and risk advisor with a specialist focus in trade, financial sanctions and ESG, with deep experience in financial services, energy and international trade. He has a background as a barrister, and management consultant and has advised on regulatory risk for the past two decades. Arjun has had previous roles at Deloitte, HSBC and Shell, where he most latterly led the Trade Compliance team during the Russia/Ukraine crisis.
