José-Antonio Maurellet SC re-elected as Chair of the Hong Kong Bar Association for 2026
3 Verulam Buildings is pleased to announce that José-Antonio Maurellet SC has been re-elected as Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association (HKBA) for 2026. He will continue to practise during the coming year.
José also delivered a speech at the Opening of the Hong Kong Legal Year on 19 January 2026, marking the start of his new term as Chair.
The HKBA is the professional regulatory body for barristers in Hong Kong. Founded in 1949, it has played a central role in the development and preservation of Hong Kong’s common law system.
José joined 3 Verulam Buildings as an Associate Member in October 2020. He is a Senior Counsel based at Des Voeux Chambers in Hong Kong. He read law at St Edmund Hall, Oxford University, was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 2000 and took silk in 2016. He was admitted in 2020 as a solicitor of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, British Virgin Islands circuit.
José is ranked as a Band 1 lawyer in the Chambers & Partners 2026 guide for Commercial Dispute Resolution in the Greater China Region and is described as “technically very strong and good at advocating for the client in court” and “an excellent person to have in your corner”.
