Matthew Watson speaking at AIJA Conference Dubai
On Wednesday 17th November 2021, Matthew Watson will be speaking at the AIJA half year conference, which is taking place in Dubai to coincide with arbitration week.
Matthew’s panel will cover Innovations in Reconciling Governing Laws and Jurisdictions.
In the GCC countries, arbitration procedures are encouraged to resolve disputes, with a preference for local as opposed to overseas procedures and facilities. The Shari’a courts and the body of Shari’a law are restricted to family matters, succession, property and to some extent torts and criminal law. In commercial matters, one way or another Shari’a interests are normally recognized, although with limitations. This session will uncover how GCC judges and arbitrators reconcile Shari’a and civil and common law systems.
Moderated by Ned Beale of Hausfeld & Co LLP, the other speakers will be Dr. Majed Al Rasheed, former Secretary General of the Bankruptcy Committee in KSA and former CEO of the Saudi Commercial Arbitration Centre and former Secretary General of Sharia Board at Albilad Bank; Zahra Rose Khawaja of Dentons, United Arab Emirates; and Stéphane de Navacelle of Navacelle Avocats, France
