Rory Phillips KC speaks at Northern Ireland public enquires seminar hosted by Eversheds Sutherland
On 22 June 2023, Rory Phillips KC joined a panel of highly experienced experts to raise awareness and understanding about public inquiries in Northern Ireland.
The seminar at Belfast’s Merchant Hotel was held as a number of significant public inquiries are taking place or expected to take place in Northern Ireland in coming years, including the Muckamore Abbey Hospital inquiry, the Omagh bombing inquiry, the historical institutional abuse inquiry and the inquiry into mother and baby homes.
Rory has extensive experience in the public inquiries and investigations field. He is currently involved in the UK Covid-19 inquiry. Previously, Rory was Counsel to the Rosemary Nelson inquiry. He also led the Counsel team which acted for and advised Sir Ross Cranston in his Review of the Customer Review established by Lloyds Bank to compensate customers for losses arising as a result of fraud at the HBOS Impaired Assets office in Reading.
Rory’s fellow panellists were High Court Judge Mr Justice David Scoffield KC, Northern Ireland’s former director of public prosecutions Barra McGrory KC SC and Jon Clements, executive director of Development at Crest Advisory, all of whom are experts in criminal justice, public inquiries and investigations who spoke at the event.
The panel discussed diverse topics including evidence gathering, the public’s view on public inquiries, inquiries which involve issues of state security, and inquiries in different jurisdictions.
