3VB has a long history of acting in insurance and reinsurance disputes of all kinds. Our clients include Lloyd’s syndicates, many of the major corporate insurers and reinsurers, insureds, and many of the leading insurance and reinsurance brokers. We have significant experience in all lines of insurance including aviation, business interruption, construction, credit, cyber, directors & officers, professional indemnity, property damage, warranty & indemnity insurance.
Our barristers have been instructed in most of the major insurance and broking disputes of recent years, including for a number of COVID-19 business interruption test claims (including The FCA Test Case, Stonegate Pub Co, London International Exhibition Centre and Bath Racecourse), for major parties on both sides of the market in the Russian aviation insurance litigation, and in the major trade credit insurance litigation which ongoing following the collapse of Greensill Bank.
3VB is also a leader in the field of insurance regulation, with barristers frequently acting for policyholders, firms and the regulators, including acting for policyholders, the PRA and the FCA in the Prudential & Rothesay.
Our expertise includes both Court and arbitral proceedings (recent arbitrations with public awards include China Taiping and Salon Gold). Members of 3VB also sit as tribunal members in insurance abitrations.
Our experience is not limited to England and Wales but also extends to foreign jurisdictions such as the UAE (particularly in the DIFC, including acting for the insurers in Horizon Energy v Al Buhaira National Insurance Co and Dhawan v Zurich International) as well as to significant instructions in Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Thomas Weitzman KC was nominated as insurance silk of the year in 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2022. Peter Ratcliffe was insurance junior of the year in 2010 and 2022 and also nominated in 2015, 2021, 2023 and 2024. William Day and Timothy Killen were nominated as insurance juniors of the year in 2023 and 2025 respectively.
